Music theory Grades 1-5

Most musicians typically go up to grade 5. It’s the bench mark for musicans as the orignal reason was in order to go beyond grade 5 with ABRSM, you needed to pass grade 5. With ABRSM, you still do. Other recognised exam boards are not as strict, and you are able to go up to grade 8.

Grade 1

You can complete the music theory grade 1 course within 5 hours and you’ll be more than prepared for the exam. If you can’t complete it in 5 consecutive days, it will take about 5 weeks.

Grade 2

You can complete the music theory grade 2 course within 7 hours and you’ll be more than prepared for the exam. If you can’t complete it in 7 consecutive days, it will take about 7 weeks.

You can complete the music theory grade 3 course within 10 hours and you’ll be more than prepared for the exam. If you can’t complete it in 10 consecutive days, it will take about 9 weeks.

Grade 4 &  5

You can complete the music theory grade 4 course within 7-8 hours and you’ll be more than prepared. If you’re taking the exams with ABRSM, you’ll need grade 5 music theory to go beyond grade 5 in your practical exams

Practical – Rock School

Rock School exams are still a fairly new exam board. They take a different approach to ABRSM with the types of pieces which they ask you to play. Unlike ABRSM, you’ll be expected to perform against a backing track during the exam.

Practical Exams – ABRSM

ABRSM is probably the most well known of exam boards. If you choose to go down this route, you’ll need Grade 5 music theory to go beyond grade 5 in your practical exams.

Hourly lessons (Beginners)

Beginners are recommend to have half hour music theory with ABRSM, and half hour practical session.  If you have already completed basic music theory training and understand the basics, half an hour is recommended.

Half hour lessons (Intermediate)

If you have basic understanding of music theory – preferably  having completed ABRSM’s Grade 1 & Grade 2, music theory,  half hour  lessons are the recommended time.
